This is an excellent way to connect and create a class specifically designed for you and your groups needs. Want a class geared toward low back pain? Interested in a class for improving balance? Contemplative movement practices such as yoga, tai chi, and qigong have evidence-based research supporting benefits in health and well-being that include improving stress markers, brain function, elevating emotional states, and reducing or managing symptoms of many clinical conditions (Schmalzl, Crane-Godreau, & Payne, 2014). Although in-person socialization results in higher-quality communication, a pre-pandemic study from 2016 showed older adults with higher social technology use had higher self-rated health scores, fewer chronic illnesses, less depression, and higher scores of well-being (Chopik, 2016).

By scheduling a group class (with friends and family of your choice) you can accomplish many things. Suggestions for specialized classes could include:

  • Therapeutic yoga focused on specific body parts: back pain, neck pain, seated work/posture strain, balance

  • Yin yoga (gentle stretching) class

  • Tai Chi for balance

  • Vinyasa yoga for continuous movement and flow with a specific theme of choice

  • Qigong for internal healing: meridian/element focus, seasonal practice, stress management

  • Breathwork (pranayama) class for nervous system regulation

  • Laughter yoga for a fun, good time
